3M Bumpons

Bumpon Protective Products
Bumpon protective products are pressure sensitive adhesive-backed polyurethane products that can be used as feet, stops, spacers, and protectors in many applications.
The urethane is a durable, resilient elastomer. The aggressive, high tack pressure sensitive adhesive is protected with a release liner making application fast and easy.

Features
Bumpon protective products feature a plasticizer-free urethane composition which exhibits:

  • Excellent skid resistance
  • Long aging resiliency - will not crack or harden
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Resistance to marring and staining

Application Ideas
Used almost anywhere slamming, scratching, nicking, scuffing, marring, sliding, vibration, or noise could be a problem for your product.

  • Feet on the bottom of blenders, desk top calculators, electronic cabinetry, telephones, keyboards, foot pedals, scales, clocks, speakers, dispensers, and computers.
  • Stops for cabinet doors, lids, and drawers.
  • Spacers for picture frames to provide alignment; for auto glass as an aid in assembly.
  • Protectors for stacked glass and metal sheets.

Adhesives for Special Applications
Foam tape and other special adhesives are available for custom applications.

Special Easy Strip Packaging
Packed into strips or die cut and perforated pads can help simplify some assembly operations. Products currently available:
SJ-5518 Die cut and perforated on pads of 64
SJ-5523 4 x 1 matrix separated by perforations
SJ-5508 Die cut and perforated on pads of 64
SJ-5514 4 x 1 matrix separated by perforations

Note: Custom Bumpon products may require a qualifying minimum and/or a one-time set-up charge. Call us for more information.

Environmental Exposure
Colored and transparent Bumpon products are intended for interior applications where resilience and other physical properties will remain unchanged. When exposed to UV light for extended periods some slight discoloration or yellowing may occur.

Bumpon products may be used outdoors in a protected area with some discoloration possible; colored Bumpon products may chalk.

Simulaneous exposure to high humidity and temperature may degrade (soften) the Bumpon product urethane.

Shelf Life
Shelf life is 18 months from date of manufacture when stored in original cartons at 60 - 80 degrees F (15 - 27 degrees C) and 40 - 50% relative humidity.

Bumpon Protective Products
Top-Hat Design
SJ-6115
SJ-6125

Product Description
SJ-6115 and SJ-6125 Bumpon Products are pressure sensitive adhesive-backed polyurethane products that can be used as feet, stops, spacers, and protectors in many applications.

Advantages of Top-Hat Design

  • Virtually impossible to remove when attached in recess cavity
  • Ideal for many permanent applications

Benefits of Providing Recess

  • Improves adhesive performance - shear strength and impact absorption.
  • Provides neat appearance.
  • Provides target area for Bumpon product during production.
  • Provides uniform location.

Product Construction

Elastomer - polyurethane
Adhesive* - synthetic rubber (R-25)
*Synthetic Rubber (R-25) - This very high tack adhesive system provides excellent initial adhesion and has the capability of providing excellent adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces including many low surface energy surfaces such as polypropylene and polyethylene.Application

To obtain maximum adhesion, surfaces must be unified, dry, and free of contaminants. Clean surfaces with low strength solvents such as isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or heptane. Note: Be sure to follow the manufacturer's precautions and directions for use when using solvents. Apply firm pressure to help increase the contact of the adhesive with the substrate. Allow time (dwell) to increase adhesion. Application Temperature: +40 degrees F (5 degrees C) to 125 degrees F (52 degrees C).

Service Temperature
-30 degrees F (-34 degrees C) to 150 degrees F (66 degrees C); 225 degrees F (107 degrees C) intermittent exposure.

Environmental Performance

Exposure to UV light for extended periods may cause slight discoloration or yellowing. Bumpon products may be used outdoors in a protected area with possible discoloration and chalking. Adhesive Stress - Types of Definitions
Top-Hat Design versus
Standard Design

Adhesive Stress - Types and Definitions
Tensile: Forces are perpendicular to the bond plane. Stress is distributed over the entire bond area. All the adhesive contributes to the bond strength.
Cleavage: Forces are concentrated at the edge of the bond plane. Stress is distributed over the entire bond area. All the adhesive contributes to the bond strength.
Peel: Forces are confined to the edge of the bond. At least one surface is flexible. Even less adhesive contributes to the bond strength than in cleavage.
Shear: Forces are parallel to the bond plane. As with tensile, stress is distributed over the entire bond area. Shear is typically not a factor when Bumpon products are attached in a recess cavity.

Product Selection

Considerations

The point of contact provides either a large contact area or a very small (point) contact area depending on the shape of the Crown of the Bumpon Product.

Top-Hat Design
Custom Shape Suggestions

To obtain best results with the Top-Hat Deisgn:
The product must be attached in a recess cavity.
The depth of the recess cavity should be equal to or slightly deeper than the height of the brim of the Bumpon Product.
The base diameter of the crown should be approximately 60-80% of the diameter of the brim of the Bumpon Product.

To obtain maximum adhesion, surfaces must be unified, dry, and free of contaminants. Surface contact is essential to adhesive performance. To maximize contact on a substrate:
Clean surfaces with low strength solvent such as isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or heptane. Note: Be sure to follow the solvent manufacturer's precautions and directions for use when using solvents.
Apply firm pressure to help increase the cold flow and contact of the adhesive with the substrate.
Allow time (dwell) to increase the surface contact and adhesion.

Note: Product selection is ultimately the user's responsibility. Users should conduct their own tests under actual use and storage conditions to determine whether product is fit for a particular purpose and user's method of application.
