Aflas

In the automobile and chemical plant application, end users require ever higher performance for rubber parts. In some cases, conventional rubber can no longer satisfy customers' higher standard requirements.

AflasTM was developed by Asahi Glass and commercialized in 1975 to supply outstanding heat and chemical resistance to the new demand for superior rubber.

AflasTM has its unique chemical structure (based on tetrafluoroethylene and propylene alternating copolymer), different from conventional FKM (based on vinylidenefluoride and hexafluoropropylene), which gives AflasTMoutstanding chemical resistance and electrical properties.

Characteristics

1. Excellent heat resistance
Propylene unit is completely arranged between the neighboring trafluoroethylene units. This structure provides excellent heat resistance even with a lower fluorine content. It is possible to use Aflas TM continuously for three months at 230°C and 30 days at 260°C. It can be used at 300°C for a short time.

2. Excellent chemical resistance
Because of its stable chemical structure, AflasTM has very good chemical resistance against high concentration of acid /alkali / oxidant under high temperature. It is superior in this property to the conventional FKM.

3. Excellent electrical properties
Because of its unique structure, AflasTM provides very good electrical properties which conventional FKM cannot supply. Its electrical properties are similar to those of silicone or EPDM rubber which are widely used to make insulation walls for cables. However, AflasTM provides even better heat resistance than those materials. This has resulted in the continued expansion into newer areas year by year.
