O-Ring Elastomers
NITRILE
(Buna N) - Nitrile formulations exhibit good mechanical and physical
properties. They are resistant to most non-aromatic petroleum-based
fluids and gases, and have been used in most industrial, automotive,
and off-the-road equipment for many years. Their usable temperature
range is -65Ff to +225Ff .
FLUOROCARBON
Viton(R)(1) and Fluorel(R) - These versatile elastomers have excellent
mechanical and physical properties, and outstanding resistance
to aromatic fuels, high temperature synthetic lubricants, and
many of the new fire resistant inclustrial fluids. They can withstand
prolonged exposure to temperatures of 450Ff in fluid service,
and limited exposure to much higher temperatures.
CHLOROPRENE
(Neoprene) - These elastomers have moderate resistance to Petroleum
based oils over a temperature range of -65Ff to +250Ff, and good
resistance to weathering and ozone.
SILICONE
- Silicone materials are recommended for applications requiring
a wide temperature range and good dry heat resistance. Their temperature
range is from -80Ff to +450Ff, the widest of any commercial elastomer.
They also have good weathering and ozone resistance, and moderate
oil resistance.
ETHYLENE
PROPYLENE - These elastomers first came Into prominent usage
as seals for Skydrol fluids used in commercial aircraft hydraulic
systems. Ethylene propylene compounds have grown in importance
over the past few years, and now are used in systems involving
hot water, steam, and phosphate ester fluids. They are also resistant
to mild acids, alkalis, and ozone. Their effective temperature
range is -65Ff to +300Ff.
